Hydration Matters: Navigating the Winter Waters for Mind and Mood

While we often associate dehydration with hot summer days, it's important to understand the impact of water and dehydration on mood and cognitive function during winter. As the winter chill sets in, my brain instantly forgets that water is a priority. Anyone else?

Winter Dehydration

Winter brings with it a unique set of circumstances that can contribute to dehydration. The cold air tends to be more dry, and paired with indoor heating, it creates an environment that can rapidly leave our bodies with less moisture. Additionally, the misconception that we don't need as much water in the winter can lead to unintentional neglect of hydration. *Ahem, oops *

Impact on Mood

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):

Winter is notorious for triggering Seasonal Affective Disorder, or seasonal depression as most refer to it. Dehydration can exacerbate the symptoms of SAD, intensifying feelings of lethargy, sadness, and hopelessness.

Energy Levels:

Proper hydration is directly linked to energy levels, further contributing to feelings of tiredness and lethargy.

Impact on Cognitive Function

Concentration and Alertness:

Dehydration has a direct impact on cognitive function, affecting concentration and alertness. Maintaining hydration is essential for staying mentally sharp.

Memory Performance:

Studies have shown that dehydration can impair short-term memory and long-term cognitive function.

Practical Tips to Stay Hydrated in the Winter

Stay Consistent:

Establish a hydration routine, aiming to drink at least 60oz of water per day. Set reminders on your phone, use a bottle with time markers, keep a water log/tracker or get yourself an accountability partner.

Choose Warm Beverages Wisely:

Be mindful of the diuretic effects (increased production of urine) of coffee and tea. Balance your warm beverage consumption with plain water to ensure proper hydration.

Moisturize Inside and Out:

Combat the dry winter air by using a humidifier indoors and investing in a good moisturizer for your skin. This can help retain both external and internal moisture.

As we revel in the winter wonderland, let's not forget the crucial role that hydration plays in our overall well-being. By staying on top of our water intake, we can mitigate the impact of dehydration on mood and cognitive function. Embrace this winter with a well-hydrated body and mind.
